Not surprising, in fairness.
So far this year, close to over a billion tweets have been sent about gaming and a pretty significant majority of them have been about 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons'.
New insights released by Twitter on the eve of Gamescom 2020 found that 'Animal Crossing' was the No.1 game tweeted about by tweeters, while the likes of 'Final Fantasy', 'Fortnite' and 'Apex Legends' ranked much further down the list. Even tentpole releases like 'Ghost of Tsushima' or 'The Last Of Us, Part II' didn't rank in the top ten for 2020.
It's not hard to see why 'Animal Crossing' is ranked so highly on Twitter, however. For one, it's had a string of celebrity players avidly tweeting about it. Elijah Wood, Brie Larson, Chrissy Tiegen, Stephen Fry, not to mention Danny Trejo (yes, 'Machete' is a major AC fan) and even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Ok! This is more fun with pals? Who wants my dodo code?!? #AnimalCrossing pic.twitter.com/gp4ShpupEA

On top of that, the game has a pretty wide base of players that includes casual players and the more dedicated kind. On top of that, the game itself is pretty diverse, appealing to young and old and right across the gender spectrum.
Interestingly, the second-most tweeted about game of the year so far is a Japanese free-to-play mobile RPG called 'Fate / Grand Order'. The game is insanely popular in Asia, but has been slowly gaining popularity in the US. In fact, total revenue for the game passed $4 billion last year. Further afield, the PS5 launch was the most tweeted-about gaming conference of the year, with 'Spider-Man: Miles Morales' being the most tweeted-about game of that same conference.
