No, not a self-help guide for 16 year old boys: Alone in the Dark is a remake of the classic spookfest role-player that has now had incarnations on the PC in the '80s, the Playstation in the '90s, and now hits the new millennium with releases on all of the major consoles.
A lot of hype surrounded the release of this title, with a heavy boost in graphics, playability and storyline promised. While the graphics are nice, and the chapter-maker idea novel, the game no longer needs to be played linearly - you can jump back and forward on the timeline if you are stuck on a section of the game. However, the player controls are a real let-down. As the building crumbles and explodes around you, your character saunters about the place, slowly moving about and easily getting caught on corners. It really is like playing the original - and that's not a compliment!
I admit that I was never a keen follower of the series, but I did expect more from this well-established franchise.
