Killary Fjord staged the inaugural Great Fjord Swim event in 2012 and we are delighted to be bringing it back for 2013.
It is a truly unique event and will be an experience to rival none. This area of outstanding beauty provides the backdrop, the warm waters of the Atlantic ocean provide the mode of transport and you will provide the power!
Killary Harbour is a fjord located in the west of Ireland in the heart of Connemara and forms a natural border between counties Galway and Mayo.
It is 16 kilometres long and in the centre over 45 metres deep. This offers a very safe, sheltered anchorage, because of the depth and the mountains to the south and north.
On its northern shore lies the mountain of Mweelrea - Connaught's highest mountain rising to 814 metres. To the south rise the Maumturk Mountains and the Twelve Bens. The area contains some of Ireland's most awe-inspiring and dramatic scenery.
The waters around Ireland's coasts are remarkably warm, 7° to 8°C warmer than the average global sea temperature at these latitudes thanks to the warm North Atlantic Drift, the main ocean current effecting Ireland. In October we expect the water temperatures in the fjord to be approx 12°. However wetsuits are compulsory!
