While the building of the new Lyric Theatre procedes at its Ridgeway Street site, the Lyric company continues to produce theatre shows and its next presentation will be the Irish premiere production of Pumpgirl. A turbo-charged race through diesel fumes and country music of the borderlands of South Armagh, the play features the eponymous Pumpgirl, rebel racer Hammy and his wife Sinead. The three characters are on a course for a dramatic collision, but will they survive the impact? The play, written by Newry playwright Abbie Spallen, is set in a petrol station just north of the Border, located on the wrong side of the fluctuating exchange rate. The business is on its last legs: battered, faded signs grace the stage.  Pumpgirl works in the garage, changes the oil and thinks she's one of the lads. The tour of this production begins in Newry Arts Centre before running at the Queens Drama Studio, Belfast from Monday 1st to Saturday 20th September (excl. Sundays). It will then go on to visit venues in Omagh, Enniskillen, Letterkenny, Sligo, Strabane, Cookstown, Dublin and Armagh. For more details see our theatre listings or visit www.lyrictheatre.co.uk.
