Everyone likes a good old read, sure don't most people read every day; they read texts, they read shop signs, they read menus...but what about poor old books? TV, the internet and busy schedules mean real life books have seen a bit of a decline but World Book Day is back on March 6th to bring attention back to the wonderful world of books with it's main focus being on encouraging the childers to explore the pleasure of books and reading. And rightly so. Readers of the future unite!
This is will be the 16th year this celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading will be celebrated in Ireland. Since the main aim is to inspire kids to read, each year World Book Day chooses a book from a children's author that has been specially written and published for World Book Day. This year it is Mary Arrigan's The Milo Adventures: Milo and the Long Lost Warriors.
A cool initiaitve is that all school children will be eligible for a special free World Book Day book token which they can use to get their hands on either Milo and the Long Lost Warriors or any of the 10 other titles specially picked for different age groups. Because of this, all children in Ireland will be able to have a book of their very own.
In addition, World Book Day supports St. Michael’s House Bring a Book Buy a Book Campaign from 1st to 9th March, which raises money to support their services for people with intellectual disabilities.
Everyone knows that reading is good for the soul - get any kids you know in on this worthwhile day and while you're at it, why not settle down in a nice big comfy armchair and snuggle up with a good old-fashioned book.
