Art at The Ivy House is presenting an exhibition of New Paintings by Derek Fitzpatrick. These are landscape paintings but not in the straight forward observational sense of what we usually understand to be landscape painting. For Derek these paintings are not about illustrating the landscape, they are an interpretation of the landscape using his hand and gut feeling to create a paintings not of the landscape but about the landscape and the experience of being in it. Paint as a substance has its own rules and language which is non-verbal. Painting should not be explained as regards its own nature, but should be able to exist by itself, standing on its own. Since graduating from Dublin Institute of Technology in 2006 Derek has had solo exhibitions at Cavan Arts Centre and Carlinn Gallery, Carlingford and has a forthcoming solo exhibition at Signal Arts Centre in Bray. He has exhibited in many group exhibitions in Ireland including Summer Group Show at the Hallward Gallery, Dublin, Loft Gallery, Dublin, La Cathedral, Dunlavin Arts Festival, RDS Student Art Awards and Fresh Faces at Art at The Ivy House in 2007 and in 2006 he was awarded The Cill Rialaig Studio Residency Scholarships for a Young Emerging Artist. This exhibition is running from 5th August to 31st October.
