See that little dot in the middle of the photo above? That's Garrett McNamara, riding what could become the biggest wave ever caught by a surfer if it's confirmed by officials. How high was it? Estimates are at 100ft, so that's just over basketball court length, but upways. Yikes.
McNamara surfed the wave off the coast of Nazare, Portugal, where giant waves apparently crash on a regular basis attracting surfers from all over the world and where he himself set the current world record after surfing a wave of 78ft in 2011. It was, predictably, terrifying. Talking to press McNamara said 'You are just going so fast. It's really, really similar to snowboarding on giant mountains. And you're just chattering, flying down this bumpy, bumpy mountain. Your brain is getting rattled. Your whole body is getting rattled.'
