A Nebraska man found himself with 180 days of jail time after pleading no contest to charges of drunken driving, second offense, and to livestock neglect after being arrested whilst drunk driving with 100 chickens in tow.
According to local news, 36-year-old Luis Motola-Palacio was pulled over in the early hours of January 31st this year for driving without his headlights on, and the officer then discovered 'a makeshift cage' in the back of his SUV containing 100 chickens, only 58 of which were alive and were severely malnourished.
Laurie Dethloff, the Executive Director of the Central Nebraska Humane Society said: 'Do I think the chickens have been abused? Absolutely! If you could see the pictures of the width and depth that they were kept in, they literally crushed each other because there was no place to move and at this time we don't even know how long they were in the vehicle.'
Palacio was also fined $1,000 and banned from driving for 15 years, and being the keeper that he is, will serve his time alongside a sentence for assault in 2013 when shot someone in the leg while butchering pigs.
