October saw a man jump out of a balloon from space, live on the internet, in one of the highlight moments of everything in 2012. Felix Baumgartner freefall from more than 128,000 feet above the earth was one of the most nerve-wracking and awe-inspiring events of the year, setting the record for the highest manned balloon flight and fastest speed of free fall at 1,342 kilometres per hour, making him the first human to break the sound barrier. Everyone either watched it or knew about it, and even though we know he survived, it's still mildly terrifying to watch back.

Chairs are like Facebook: No, Facebook, they’re not. October saw Facebook's first 'ad', which was much more a meandering confusing video about chairs that was supposed to move us, or something. But it didn't, and an Irish trio proved why, with a fantastic parody video to make us all proud.
