12 days of Meme-mas: April 2012

April saw a significant increase in the quality of memes, which may have something to do with their shorter half-life than most memes this year. And while there are many many options to choose from, April really belonged to one woman and her phone. Texts From Hillary began life as a tumblr, when two Washington based PR guys, Adam Smith and Stacy Lambe, took two photos of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton busy on her phone while on board a military aircraft that had been captured by Reuters and TIME Magazine, and mixed it with an image of Obama on his phone to produce this wonder.

From there it exploded. Hillary’s fictional badass attitude went around the world in a 24 hour storm of attention, resulting in knock-offs, sendups and more. The pièce de résistance though came when Hillary herself got in on the joke, putting the perfect bookend on one of the years meme highlights.

Honourable Mentions

Ridiculously Photogenic Guy: Everyone in the world was both amazed and jealous of Zeddie Little, aka Ridiculously Photogenic Guy, who was papped running a marathon and looking more handsome in the photograph than some people achieve in a lifetime. While running a marathon. A MARATHON. Seriously, it’s like he’s a robot or something. Anyway, the image went viral, with Little ending up on chat shows all over the States, his image pasted across more social networks than you could shake a stick at. He now gets to go down in history as the most photogenic man ever. We’d hate him if he wasn’t so damn charming.
