Viewer Reviews of LARS AND THE REAL GIRL
Weirdly amazing - meI loved this film. Ryan Gosling was incredible in portraying his role of Lars, a shy recluse who falls in love with a sex doll. This sounds like the most ridiculous story line but it is so heart felt and emotional to watch. The town folk all play along with Lars, who in all fairness is not all with it, and through this you actually believe Bianca, the doll, more ...
Laugh but Cry too! - SusanWonderful, different, funny and sad. A film that you leave after two hours or so but will keep coming back to in your head for days afterwards. Brilliant script, acting and direction. Definitely one for the DVD collection. The best though was when the film finished and we were all leaving our very small local university cinema and one guy was heard to say more ...
Must-see film of the year - simonconnollyLars is a shy and awkward man who buys a sex doll to help him go out and make friends with the locals in this hilarious and tragic film which brings a new meaning to the Romantic-Comedy genre. despite their best efforts Lars' brother and his preganant wife can't seem to get him to socialise, then when half-Danish, half-Brazilian wheelchair-bound missionary more ...
Rotten - chpThe first time I fallen asleep in the cinema in a long long time. It drags, is not funny and was a complete waste of two hours and hard earned cash. The worst film i've seen in a long time! more ...
Lovely - FinnAh this was very good. Sweet, sad, and poignant. Everybody could understand his fears, even if his solution was somewhat unusual. I had to wait to catch the credits as the acting was exemplary. Emily Mortimer was superb, so feminine always wanting to make sure everything was alright and pushing her guy into helping her, while he was trying to be as rational more ...
Touching and funny! - cooberI've just been to see Lars and the Real Girl and am still touched by the simplicity and beauty of the emotions portrayed in it. Gosling is fantastic in the lead and shows an amazing ability to portray insecurity and emotion in a way seldom seen on the big screen. I just loved Emily Mortimer too, another great performance. It's touching to see a film that more ...
Overrated - DickFirstly to say that generally the acting in Lars and the Real Girl is good. Gosling portrays a vague pseudo mental illness with just enough ticks and blinking to tell you hes not alright but not enough to make you feel genuinely sorry for him. The film starts with a promising premise of Lars arriving with a blow up doll only for his brother and sister in more ...
can't believe all the good reviews - gobbledegookThe only way I have been "moved" (as so many of my fellow reviewers are writing) by this film is into putting my own view on it up on here. Has the delusion in the film rubbed off on folks. Firstly I went to this film hoping for a lot more laughs, so if you're looking for laughs watch In Bruges if you haven't seen that as this film has some good more ...

Lovely Lovely Film!!! - CatThis is one of the most heart warming films i have seen! It made me laugh, cry and mostly smile! Ryan Gosling is amazing as Lars! The plot had the potential to be terrible but it was written and acted in such a way that it was a thought provoking and NICE film! Best nine euro I have spent in a while! more ...
Excellent, touches your heart. - maliboorooThis is an excellent film, for the older age bracket (16+). It is a heart warming storey about a very lonely man that lives in his brother's garage. One of his college's shows him a website that sells very realistic love dolls and six weeks later lars' arrives in the post. He is dillusional and believes that she is a real woman. His brother and more ...
gosling shines on - kowalskiEver since I saw The Believer I have followed Gosling's career with interest. An engaging script negates the surreal premise with ease. The cast backs up the main star in what must be one of the most charming and in turn disarming movies in recent memory. Highly recommended. more ...
Great indie flick!! - amyLars (Ryan Gosling) is a shy small town boy. His brother and sister-in-law want to help him get social and townies want to fix him up, but he just keeps to himself. One day he orders a real sex doll and introduces her to the family as his girlfriend. The town shrink suggests that everyone play along to work out his delusion, and hilarity ensues. Gosling more ...
Hope springs eternal - HurumaI was expecting something hilarious. It was funny in parts but I was not prepared to be so deeply moved. Ryan Gosling is fantastic and I love the way the people all gathered round in a way that made it possible for Lars to be set free. Maybe a bit unrealistic but it leaves me with a great sense of hope! Excellent. Has to be seen. more ...
Deflated - PlantFrom the start if this wasn't to be just way too weird it had to have a really really great pay back…but it didn't. If you remember back to a film called Splash it worked it had humour and what it had going for it was that some knew the truth of the situation some suspected and some found out and it was how all this evolved and resolved with lots of more ...
Fantastic Movie - rob cumiskeyAnother great Indie Flick from Ryan Gosling. One of my favourite actors of recent years, Gosling continues to broaden his acting and create extremely watchable and touching movies. This film shouldn't work. The premise for the movie is strange and off-beat, but in a way that would have most directors putting something slightly distasteful and unwatchable more ...
Blew Me Away!!! - HSPI have seen quite a few movies this year & this one is top of the charts with me at the moment. Everything about this movie is perfect. OK Lars (Ryan Gosling) is not perfect in the storyline because he suffers from a delusional illness which may have been caused at an early age being raised by a broken-hearted father as his mother died giving birth to more ...
Brilliant a Must see - jennithI was not looking forward to seeing this film when I heard the plot was about a guy who gets a blow up doll and thinks it is his real partner, however I was wrong and this film is brilliant it is definitely an early contender for best film of the year. The film starts slowly and there are initially a few jokes and nervous laughter as you expect the film to more ...
had the whole cinema in stitches!!! - dazzling_jem2offbeat, and upbeat... as if "the royal Tannenbaums" was rewritten by Disney. best flick I've seen in ages. more ...
shamelessly funny - Bunny StarrRyan Gosling proves yet agin the breadth of his skill in this offbeat yet thought provoking film from the great white north. The film asks the audience to accept and laugh rather than judge and laugh. Lars' psychological complexity seems to arise form his inability to accept the death of his parents, and the impending new arrival from his brother and his more ...
Sometimes the best gems are made of silicon - jonathaneganFor the first few minutes of the movie, I sat perplexed, chortled at the impossibility of the story as it was introduced. Then, sitting with my defensive perplexity I felt my eyes warm and water to a story about love that had the stony faced man to my right reach for his face more than a couple of times. In a world where love is hard to find, and avoidance more ...
Spectacular - tiredandhungrySuch a lovely movie, Ryan Gosling is just amazing. I'd watch it again and again. more ...
Its a heart warmer!! - lodonovanThis film is not only a pleasure to watch but under the direction of Craig Gillespie it brings awareness around a serious issue. He manages to let the audience laugh guilt free about the realities of having a mental health illness by taking away the stigma usually attached. If I was to pick faults I would have to say that it's a little cliché and more ...
There is life after Young Hercules! - bobbi JonesThank God for Ryan Gosling. After the demise of Heath Ledger, I didn't think there was another up & coming young actor capable of taking on roles against the pretty boy type with such believable physical & emotional transformation. In Lars & the Real Girl, an almost unrecognisable Gosling,(whether from weight gain or strategically placed more ...
Weird but excellent. - leo1312I saw this film last month on the plane on the way back from the States and, while being one of the the strangest things Ive ever seen (the weirdest being Tideland-just don't go there, your sanity will suffer), this film was truly excellent. I've been a fan of Ryan Gosling since I saw him in The Notebook and Fracture, and this film is another shining more ...
Could Be This Year's - pandabatLars (Ryan Gosling) is not really the full bob. Hampered by social handicaps, possibly stemming back to the death of his mother during his birth, he is nonetheless loved within the community, not least by his brother, Gus (Paul Schneider), and his pregnant wife, Karin (Emily Mortimer). Due to the impending arrival of Karin's baby, due to the the arrival of more ...
