Gorillaz' opera collaboration with Alan Moore has fallen through, according to the Watchmen and V For Vendetta writer. Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett had planned to work with Moore on an opera about the magician philosopher and alchemist John Dee, but all plans are now off, as the Gorillaz duo's many commitments meant they failed to meet Moore's deadlines.

Speaking at the University of Northampton, Moore explained that he had written a whole third of the opera, but had yet to receive work from the boys that they had agreed to contribute to his magazine, Dodgem Logic.
"Nobody had done anything else upon the opera ... I said, 'Yeah, I can get the other two-thirds of the opera done by February, middle of March at the latest. It will mean working flat out, but I can do it. You still alright for that deadline on Issue 3?' And they said 'Yep,' and it turned out they wouldn't be able to make out that Issue 3 deadline because even though we extended it for them they had too many commitments, so actually I decided I had too many commitments as well. And since I had never received any money or a contract, I was alright saying, "Yeah, I'm pulling out of this".'

Meanwhile, Gorillaz will make their new single, 'Melancholy Hill' available as a special download package from iTunes. It will include the single and video, remixes by Japanese Popstars and She Is Danger as well as a new Labyrinth remix of 'Stylo' featuring Tinie Tempah. It is due for release on July 26th.
