Paul McCartney has taken on a new and challenging project - to write the music for a ballet. The former Beatle told BBC News that he had been commissioned to work on the piece, but admitted it was still in its early stages.

"I'm interested in doing things I haven't done before ... That offer came up and I love writing music, the two went together and I said, 'Yeah,' so I just accept things before I even know what I'm doing."

"I don't really know that much about it yet. I'm just writing music for it, but it's a switch!"

Though McCartney has little experience with ballet, he has composed classical music before. In 1991, he released the Oratorio, Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart).

The musical icon was also recently awarded America's Gershwin Prize for his lifetime contribution to popular music by President Barack Obama at a ceremony in the White House.

As yet, there is no deadline for McCartney's work on the ballet.
