While some might think that Donald Trump and his band of invertebrate dumbasses is a goldmine for comedy, it appears that it's still a mine - and that means it's exhausting, frustrating and seems like it's going nowhere except deeper, darker and into more dangerous territory.

At a recent panel discussion as part of the Television Critics' Association press tour, writers from a number of late-night comedy shows were asked about the question of Trump and the media. One writer for The Daily Show, Hallie Haglund, summed it up pretty succinctly.

"During Obama, we'd have a week where we didn't use a clip of the president. We'd be talking about what else was going on in the world. We recently had an act where we did not say Trump's name once. I cannot remember the last time that happened. It's as frustrating as it is boring."

Another interesting point brought up was the political slant by late-night talk shows, and how unlikely it is that a Trump supporter would even watch their shows. For Chrstine Nangle, who writes on Comedy Central's The President Show, the question is tone. "You don't want to say to a Trump voter, 'You're so stupid, you got conned'... it's about trying to present from a different angle. This is what's happening. This is who this is. See for yourself."

Despite the constant barrage of scandals coming from the Trump White House, none of the writers see any sign of an ending - but they're still going to keep at it. "If there was suddenly more cancer, there'd be a lot more cancer organizations fighting it... We made him. We allowed this to happen," said Nangle.
