The long running sketch comedy show may be about to get an Irish makeover and we’re not quite sure how we feel about it.
Kite Entertainment, the makers of TV3’s Gogglebox, recently bought the rights from NBC Universal and will now pitch the idea to Irish broadcasters, writers and comedians in the hopes of having it produced.
So, what might an Irish version look like? We really hope it’s going to be more than Mario Rosenstock as Michael D. or Oliver Callan as Enda Kenny. We’ve seen plenty of them on the Late Late.
The show’s profile has risen in recent months after several sketches starring Alec Baldwin as President Trump and Melissa McCarthy as Trump’s press secretary Sean Spicer went viral.
“There is always an appetite for satire here,” said Kite managing director Darren Smith, describing the two-hour format as a “monster” to make.
The show, which has been running since 1975, has been the launching pad for a long list of American comedians and actors including Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, Billy Crystal and more recently Andy Samberg and Kristin Wiig.
Although the show has had several international remakes in the past, this would be the first English language version. Here’s hoping.
