Someone needs to tell Donald Trump the first rule of comedy: don't go after the guy with the mic.

After Donald Trump personally called out Stephen Colbert for his comments and performance on 'The Late Show' in his TIME magazine interview, you really have to wonder what kind of response Trump was expecting. Does he not know how this works by now?

Because Colbert was only delighted.

"The president of the United States has personally come after me and my show. And there’s only one thing to say: Yay!" he said at the top of his show on Thursday night. "I won!"

"Mr. Trump, there’s a lot you don’t understand, but I never thought one of those things would be show business. Don’t you know I’ve been trying for a year to get you to say my name?" he continued. "Oh, please, don’t make me trend on Twitter again! Don’t throw me in that #briarpatch!"

He also called BS on Trump's comments on his ratings, saying:

"Making jokes about you has been good for ratings. It’s almost as if the majority of Americans didn’t want you to be president. But you know who’s got really bad ratings these days? You do. Terrible approval numbers. I hear they’re thinking about switching your time slot with Mike Pence."

We're so happy that the gloves are finally off. This is the TV that we want to see.
