On Friday we brought you an extended clip from the sixth and final season of the global hit that is Downton Abbey, but now at last they have dropped the trailer, and it's a bit of a tear-jerker.

We hear Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) tell Mr. Carson (Jim Carter), “If I could stop history in its tracks, maybe I would. But I can’t, Carson, for neither you nor I can hold back time."

See what we mean? Totes emosh, as the kids say. (They don't say that anymore, do they?)

Director Gareth Nearne said of the final season; "We wanted to close the doors of 'Downton Abbey' when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans. We can promise a final season full of all the usual drama and intrigue, but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up."

Downton fans will be happy to hear that there is still a possibility of a movie, with Nearne saying in March; "It is definitely something that we're contemplating. It would be great fun to do. I think it would be a great extension of everything we love about the TV show."

While there's also talk of a spin-off with Nearne adding; "There has again been endless speculation about this. There are no definite plans for a spin-off. [But] again, I can't rule this out."

So there is hope for more Downton at some point, but for now, take out the tissues and prepare your goodbyes...

Season six of Downton Abbey begins on ITV on Sunday September 20th.
