SPOILERS. As the documentary makers, Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, sat down with Stephen Colbert (scroll for interview), Jodi Stachowski was engaged in an interview of her own.
Those watching Making a Murderer will see Jodi portrayed as Steven's loyal fiancee, who stayed in his trailer while he was in prison, supported his parents, and was ultimately forced out of his life due to police repeatedly arresting her. Now - in this interview - she's claiming she once "ate two boxes of rat poison just so I could go to the hospital to get away from him and ask them to get the police to help me." When asked why she stayed for two years, she says she had "no place else to go."
Stachowski also claims Avery started abusing her two weeks into their relationship, and that he threatened to kill her: "Including an incident where he threatened to burn her house down and another where he “threatened to throw a blow dryer” in the bath tub and claimed he would get away with it."
According to Us Weekly: "Stachowski reached out to Nancy Grace's producer, Natisha Lance, to share her side of the story... the two sit down face to face and discuss why Stachowski is suddenly choosing to speak out now. "It's been 10 years," Lance notes to her subject. 'Why are you talking to me? What do you want people to know?'" Seemingly Stachowski says "the petitions to pardon Avery - after the wildly popular release of Making a Murderer - are why she's speaking out now. 'She says that the truth needs to come out... And she says that the documentary is full of a bunch of lies'."
There's no mention if Jodi was paid for the time it took to take the interview.
