One of TV's best comedies has reached the end of the road as it's been announced that HBO's political satire series Veep will roll its credits for the final time at the end of the seventh season.

The comedy, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, was created by Armando Iannucci (The Thick of It, In the Loop), and has won 22 awards, including five Best Comedy Actress Emmys for Louis-Dreyfus.

It was the decision of the show's producers, with HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys releasing a statement saying, "Julia Louis-Dreyfus' comedic brilliance infused Selina with a dynamic presence and a vibrant wit which will ensure her a place in the history of television's most iconic comedic characters.

"We love the show and everyone involved but respect the producers' choice to bring Selina Meyer's journey to its conclusion after an extraordinary run of critical and award-winning acclaim."

Louis-Dreyfus told The Hollywood Reporter, "It became clear that this season should be the last season. We don't want to repeat ourselves or wear out our welcome. The story has a finality to it that feels end-of-series."

The actress, who of course is also known for her role as Elaine in hit sitcom Seinfeld added, "I struggled with it. And then it just hit me. It's hard to say goodbye to such a good thing. We struggled with this at Seinfeld as well."

While showrunner David Mandel said, "It was just a very natural thing. We don't want to repeat ourselves or be boring. It's bittersweet but it's right."

Have no fear Veep fans though, they won't be going out on a whimper, "I really feel this is my baby and I don't want to mess it up," Louis-Dreyfus said. "I would hate to end on a less-than note. That would make me nuts."

Shooting for the final ten-episode season begins in October, with Mandel saying, "I'm so fucking excited for what we've got on the board and for fans to see what we've cooked up."

Before that, the show will be heading off to the Emmys on Sunday, 17th September where Veep is nominated for Best Comedy while Julia Louis-Dreyfus is once more up for Lead Actress in a Comedy, Anna Chlumsky is up for Supporting Actress, and both Tony Hale and Matt Walsh are nominated for Supporting Actor in a Comedy.
