Christmas is a joyful occasion where we can catch up with family and friends and generally all delight in our merriment... for about a good hour or so. And then we just want to kick back on the couch with our selection boxes and see what the TV Gods have chosen to entertain us with this festive season.

We have trailed through the TV listings and picked out the cream of the crop of what's on the telly box this yuletide. You can catch our top six TV highlights every day here, our daily soap preview here,  while you can also check out our Christmas Movie Guide.

Oh and sure while we have you, happy Christmas!

1. Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas Special

Christmas Day: RTE1: 10.25pm

If previous years are anything to go by, this will be the most watched show over the festive period in Ireland, as Mrs Brown returns for the first of two of her annual Christmas Specials. This time around, the Irish mammy is refusing to have a tree after all the trouble in previous years, which is fair enough really. However, with Grandad's health proving a concern, there's more than just the tree missing from the front room. To add to the drama, there's a fire in the salon which leaves Rory and Dino with nowhere to cut hair, while Dermot faces stiff competition to win a contract but is business partner Buster up to the challenge?

2. Gogglesprogs Christmas Special

Christmas Eve - Channel 4: 8.00pm

In what's set to be one of the cutest shows on TV this Christmas, Channel 4's popular series Gogglebox airs a new episode of their spin-off 'Gogglesprogs'. It sees a range of little ones give their views on everything from the American Presidential election to TV's most popular hits, including Strictly Come Dancing, First Dates and Planet Earth II. Among the regular cast are six-year-old Molly and her nine-year-old brother William, who both love helping out on the family farm, friends Stephanie - who loves Justin Bieber - and Christina, who prefers classical music.

3. Doctor Who Christmas Special

Christmas Day - BBC1: 5.45pm

Fans of the Time Lord will be waiting on just one thing on Christmas Day, this much-anticipated Doctor Who Christmas Special. It will see the Doctor spending Christmas in New York, however it won't be a quiet one as a deadly alien menace is set to attack the city. The Time Lord needs all the help he can get, and luckily, Manhattan has a super hero of their own (Orphan Black's Justin Chatwin). The Doctor, who although will be without a trusty sidekick, will also be joined by Matt Lucas, reprising his role from last year's festive episode, as well as Wolf Hall star Charity Wakefield.

4. The Great Christmas Bake Off

Christmas Day - BBC One: 4.45pm

It wouldn't be Christmas with a (very final) visit to the 'Great British Bake Off' tent and this year Mary and Paul are donning their best Christmas jumpers and putting some of our favourite bakers past through their paces once again.

This edition of 'Bake Off' is set to be even more bittersweet than this year's finale as we know it's our last ever slice of Mel, Sue and Mary Berry inside the tent before the show ups and moves to Channel 4, and the trio knew it while filming. Hearts (and eggs) will be no doubt be broken.

5. Call The Midwife Christmas Special

Christmas Day - BBC One: 8.00pm

For this year's Christmas special we leave Poplar, and London, to join the staff of Nonnatus House on a trip to South Africa. They visit a mission clinic threatened with closure, and help the understaffed and under resourced facility deal with an influx of patients. Call the Midwife's Christmas episodes are always an emotional affair, and this year will be no different. Make sure you have a pack of tissues to go with the tin of Roses. Sinead Cusack joins the cast, playing the doctor in charge of the South African clinic.

6. Outnumbered Christmas Special

St Stephen's Day - BBC1: 10.00pm

The Brockmans are back! And my God those kids have grown up so much. It's been three years since we last caught up with this lot, so we're dying to see what family life is like now. It's Boxing Day in their house and the family have to carry out a special mission for Grandad. However, as usual things don't go their way as they are beset by car problems, child problems, parent problems, emotional problems and the Second World War. It's up to Pete and Sue to put things right - but if they cannot do it, then it seems the kids will just have to sort things out instead.

7. Pull Like a Dog

December 27th - RTE1: 9.30pm

Many of us were glued to the Rio Olympics this past summer, but we all know there were two boys who won the hearts of the nation, and they are of course the O'Donovan brothers. The silver medalists charmed us all with their laidback and 'typical Irish' demeanour in interviews, and have become household names at this point. This documentary, named after their famous line 'pull like a dog', follows the Olympic rowers as they return to their parish of Lisheen and Skibbereen rowing club in the aftermath of their success.

8. Charlie Brooker's 2016 Wipe

December 29th - BBC2: 9.00pm

Another staple of the Christmas schedule is of course Charlie Brooker's End of Year Wipe as the writer and broadcaster gives his unique and satirical look back on the past 12 months, and what a 12 months it's been. The Black Mirror creator has said that they struggled to edit down the show to one hour with all that has gone down this year, including the deaths of countless cultural icons, Brexit, and Donald Trump being voted into the White House. Charlie is joined by the ever-insightful Philomena Cunk, who faces her most challenging interview yet as she tries to get some sense out of Professor Brian Cox.

9. Conor McGregor: Year of the Champion

December 29th - 3e: 9.00pm

It's been a remarkable twelve months for Conor McGregor. This time last year he had just shocked the world by defeating Jose Aldo after just thirteen seconds to become the UFC Featherweight Champion. To say the following twelve months have been a rollercoaster ride for the Crumlin native would be a massive understatement. He went on to suffer his first ever UFC defeat at the hands of Nate Diaz before triumphing against the Californian in the rematch. He then went on the win the UFC Lightweight Championship last month and in the process becoming the first ever dual weight champion in the organisation's history. This special charts the incredible highs and lows that McGregor has come through in the last year.
