Time Team's professor Mick Aston has died at the age of 66.

The archaeologist appeared on the show from 1994 to 2011, 19 series in total. He was also well known for his brightly coloured jumpers he wore on the series.

It was announced on his official Twitter and Facebook page that he had sadly passed away, 'It is with a very heavy heart that we've been informed that our dear colleague Mick Aston has passed away. Our thoughts are with his family.'

His colleague Phil Harding, who worked on the series with Aston, paid his condolences and while he knew Aston had suffered health problems his death still came as a huge shock. 'He was a seriously good mate and a seriously good archaeologist, a unique man. Everybody loved him, he just had a way with people. I cannot believe there was anybody who disliked him, he just had such a relaxed way. It just seems so incredible, like a bad dream, but unfortunately this is no dream. He had incredible knowledge and an effortless way of making archaeology accessible to people.'

Aston left the series last year after he accused the programme of dumbing down. 'There is a lot less archaeology and more pratting about. The time had come to leave, I never made any money out of it, but a lot of my soul went into it. I feel really, really angry about it.' he said. The show has now been axed by Channel 4.
