Amazon is developing the series based on the books of Robert E. Howard.

The names attached to the project so far are Colony co-creator Ryan Condal, The Handmaid’s Tale executive producer Warren Littlefield and director Miguel Sapochnik, whose helmed several Game of Thrones episodes including the Emmy award winning ‘Battle of the Bastards’.

Deadline claims that the creative team want to retell the classic story by bringing the character back to his literary roots.

The Conan series is part Amazon’s big push into the fantasy drama genre and follows on from their purchase of the television rights to Lord of the Rings for a reported $250 million.

The character of Conan has been adapted for the screen several times, most famously by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1970’s.
