According to showrunner Darren Star and writer Michael Patrick King, only one scene in 'Sex And The City' was fully censored by HBO.
In a lengthy article by Vanity Fair about the show's illustrious history and the secrets behind the doors of the writer's room, only one scene in their mind was beyond the pale for HBO - a television studio that's had no issue in the past or present with incest, head-crushing, and all sorts of violence and sexuality.
Granted, when you hear what it is, it absolutely makes sense how it was censored. The scene in question took place during the first season of the show in an episode (The Monogamists, S01E07) where Charlotte, played by Kristin Davis, is casually dating a man who's insistent on oral sex. As Darren Star tells it, the character was "basically was always pushing her head down to give him oral sex."
"And he had this golden retriever who was always around. In the final scene, she basically let him have it about being offended by his insistence on just wanting a blow job. She accused him of only liking her for that and kind of stormed out. And then she walked back in and saw that his golden retriever was going down on him."
Yes, read that again. Go back and let that sink in for a minute. That's why it was censored. Makes sense, doesn't it?
