Although most people know 'The Purge' as a film franchise, a television series spinoff is now on its way to our screens in the near future.

Set over the course of twelve hours in an alternate-present where all crime is legal in that timeframe, the story follows a group of people seemingly unrelated to one another who come face-to-face with America's reality.

The series is being broached as a ten-episode 'television event', which likely means that if it becomes popular, a second season will be commissioned and go from there. Casting wise, arguably the most recognisable name is either William Baldwin or Lee Tergesen, who was in HBO shows like 'Oz' and 'Generation Kill'.

What's always made 'The Purge' such a frustrating watch is how the movies are often so narrowed in on the night in question and doesn't give context beyond it. The synopsis for the series explains that it'll go beyond Purge Night, stating that "as the clock winds down with their fates hanging in the balance, each character is forced to reckon with their pasts as they discover how far they will go to survive the night."

In other words, awkward conversations the next morning. There's no word yet if terrestrial stations here in Ireland have picked it up, but the likelihood is that it'll make an appearance somewhere along the way. The series kicks off on September 4th in the US.
