As we reported last weekend, a television adaptation of Lord Of The Rings is currently in the works and it looks like Amazon are making a strong case for their stewardship of JRR Tolkien's most seminal work.
Given how the winner of said rights has to cough up something in the region of $250 million, it's going to take a major player like Amazon to do it. In an interview with EW, Sean Astin - best known for playing Samwise Gamgee in the original trilogy, and most recently playing Bob in Stranger Things - gave his own opinion on the idea.
According to Astin, it was inevitable that Lord Of The Rings would get a remake. "I’ve been saying for 15 years that maybe like 12 years after Lord of the Rings came out, that it would get remade. And people always said, ‘Oh no, it’ll never get remade! It’s a classic! They could never top it!’ And I’m like, ‘No, it’ll get remade. It’s a massive story! The characters are so beloved.’”
On the topic of returning as Samwise, however, Astin wasn't all that positive - especially considering Samwise was a young guy and Sean Astin is older now. "When I saw the Amazon thing, that didn’t even occur to me. I just sort of thought, ‘What would it be like to see the next Sam there?’ I think it’s an intriguing idea [but] the devil’s in the details. How would they do it? How? Who?"
There's no further details on who's planning what with Lord Of The Rings, and given that it's such a rich universe to mine for potential ideas, anything's possible. Speaking of mines, Astin's idea for a Lord Of The Rings TV series? Focus it on the Mines Of Moria. "The Mines of Moria are referred to a lot in Lord of the Rings. And I guess in the Hobbit trilogy, you spent a little time with them, but the culture of the dwarves in the mines… I would love to see like five hours of that."
