Channel 4's acquisition of The Great British Bake Off was met with dismay from the majority of fans, particularly with the news that presenters and judges, Mary Berry, Sue Perkins, and Mel Giedroyc wouldn't be following the show to the new network.

While it has been confirmed that Paul Hollywood would stay with the show, speculation has been rife as to who will front the new look show alongside him and a frontrunner has reportedly emerged from a sea of candidates.

According to The Sun, Richard Ayoade is the broadcaster's top choice to be a presenter on the show.

“Richard is a really popular choice at the minute, as many think he’s got a great character that would bring a great spark to the show."

“He’s got a wonderful off-beat sense of humour, which would really fit the change of channel – and would no doubt be a popular choice with viewers too. It’s still early days, but he is definitely up there and now the leading candidate.”

Ayoade of course came to prominence thanks to sitcoms such as The IT Crowd, but has since gone on to have a diverse career that's seen him star in Hollywood movies alongside Ben Stiller, direct independent films starring Jesse Eisenberg and host C4's documentary series, Travel Man.

While Ayoade may not have been the first name on everyone's mind we definitely could get on board with him hosting the show.

Other candidates reportedly in consideration are Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders.
