Although Doctor Who has struggled to reach the heights of previous seasons, Peter Capaldi's managed to endear himself to fans of the long-running British sci-fi series.

Following reports that Doctor Who was facing cancellation and a reformatted series, it's now been confirmed that Peter Capaldi has signed on for another season of Doctor Who.

Capaldi, who replaced Matt Smith in 2013, has received a mixed response from fans. However, a source from BBC reported that the Scottish actor is "happy playing the Doctor for as long as the BBC – and viewers – want him. We are very happy with him and viewers are also warming to him. He loves playing the Doctor and of course we want him to do another series."

The source went on, saying that "Peter is keen to complete three years playing the Doctor to round off his storylines. That will take us until the end of next year. After that, who knows?"

This season will see Jenna Coleman leave the show, who currently plays Clara Oswald. As for a possible replacement to Capaldi, it's understood Game of Thrones' Richard Madden is being courted for the role by BBC.
