For many people, Patrick Stewart's performance as Captain Picard is the foremost character in Star Trek - more so than Captain Kirk and William Shatner.
As well as taking in seven seasons and a number of films in the role, Stewart has pretty much left the character behind him and is now more recognised for his role in the X-Men franchise as Professor Charles Xavier. Indeed, his performance in this year's Logan could very likely net him a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Still, for all this and other roles and performances, Picard still gets brought up in interviews.
In a recent interview with Variety, Stewart was quizzed on the possibility of returning to the role. While he did seem initially skeptical, he explained he was open to it if "someone came up with a brilliant idea."
"One thing that might interest me would be to bring all the existing casts of Star Trek from the last 50 years together for one big story," said Stewart. This all comes less than a week after it was confirmed that Quentin Tarantino and JJ Abrams are set to work together on a fourth Trek film.
A clip of Quentin Tarantino's time on the Nerdist podcast from a couple of years ago has been doing the rounds, wherein he talks about a key episode from The Next Generation called Yesterday's Enterprise that saw the crew deal with time-travelling and their predecessor, the Enterprise-C.
No details have been released on what Tarantino's pitch was for Star Trek, but it wouldn't be in the least bit surprising if it somehow tied The Next Generation, Discovery, Abrams' Trek and the Original Series together into one, unifying film - which could potentially see Picard back in the Starfleet uniform.
