We've been following the lead-up to the all-new Star Trek TV series and everything we're hearing about it so far has been positive.
For one, Bryan Fuller has brought on Nicholas Meyer - who wrote / directed The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country - as a consulting producer / writer for the series and could even possibly be directing a couple of episodes. That's pretty great, but now there's a few more details cropping up online.
It's been reported that the Star Trek TV series will NOT be set in JJ Abrams' rebooted universe, instead setting the series between Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Whether or not the Enterprise is involved is anybody's guess, but rumblings suggest that it won't be involved.
Instead, the series will centre around another ship in Starfleet. In fact, each season will be in an anthology format - which seems to be the buzzword in television, lately - meaning that there's a possibility that each season will focus on a new crew and a new ship in Starfleet.
A press release from CBS reads: "The brand-new 'Star Trek' will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."
Whatever about the anthology aspect of the series, the fact that it's not following JJ Abrams' Star Trek series is only a good thing. The two need to be and should be distinct from one another. It's not for a second saying that the two can't co-exist. Anyone who watched the original series will tell you just how pulpy and action-packed it got whereas the Next Generation was more stately, thought-provoking and less centred around Picard running off with alien women.
Granted, Riker was a dog and Worf always had Lursa and Betor sniffing around him, but still.
As for casting, there's still no official word as of yet. The last we heard, Tony Todd - who you may know from Final Destination, Candyman and Worf's brother, Kurn, in the Next Generation - is reportedly close to being announced as the new captain. The as-yet untitled Star Trek TV series is scheduled for some time in 2017 when it will be the 50th anniversary of Star Trek's original broadcast on US television.
