This is the first series of the time-travelling doctor that a woman has taken over the lead role - and fans are singing her praises. 

According to Deadline, Jodie Whittaker's debut as the Doctor was watched on BBC One by 8.2 million viewers, which "smashed the performance of recent airings". This is a massive boost to the series, considering Peter Capaldi’s season last year opened with 4.6 million viewers. 

The first episode of the eleventh season, which aired last night, centred around a mysterious woman (Whittaker) who falls from the sky, and is unable to remember her own name.

Fans have been sharing their thoughts on this new take of the "Time Lord", with one even saying Whittaker's debut was "the most 'Doctor Who' episode of 'Doctor Who' for a long time":
