She's been a staple to the series since 2012, but it's been confirmed that Jenna Coleman is stepping down from her role as Clara Oswald in Doctor Who.

Coleman announced the news on Nick Grimshaw’s Radio 1 show this morning, saying she will depart the show in this upcoming season, which kicks off on Saturday.

The actress said; "I have left the TARDIS, I have, it’s happened. I’ve filmed my last scenes. It was emotional. It’s been in the works for a very long time," she said. "Steven [Moffat] and I sat down a year ago and tried to work out the best way to do it. It will happen at some point this season. Hopefully people will love it."

Coleman is the longest running assistant to the Doctor having worked alongside both Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.

She added; "There’s not a lot of jobs where you have a space ship, an alien as your best mate and get to run away from monsters. It’s so much fun, I love it. It’s such a unique beast. It’s been really special."

You won't have much time to miss her though, as the 29-year-old actress is also shortly due to star as Queen Victoria in a new ITV drama which will follow the early life of the monarch.
