James Marsters, who played bad-boy vampire Spike, has said that he's open to reprising his role for the upcoming 'Buffy' reboot.
Speaking at the TCA press tour for 'Marvel's Runaways', Marsters said that he's "open to whatever Joss (Whedon) has in mind," and but added that there'd need to be some serious CGI de-aging to make him look like an ageless vampire. "I think we’d have to get some really good lighting together to sell Spike, but they are doing more and more and more, both with actor health and with special effects," Marsters said. "What would be great is if he comes back and he’s like, ‘Buffy, you look terrible. I still love you of course.’ That would be fun."
The reboot's showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen has since clarified the intent of the reboot, saying that it's not strictly a reboot - but rather a sequel-of-sorts to the original series. Marsters, meanwhile, said whether he's invited back or not, he's still onboard with the new series.
"I think it's fabulous," said Marsters. "I saw a tweet by the woman who sold the idea that she wants an entirely new slayer within the universe established by Buffy. So she’s not going to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s going to be Sabrina or whatever it is and I think that’s a great way to go. I’m very excited about it. I think that the world very much needs a new slayer right now."
