Although Netflix didn't originally begin as a creator of content, i.e. TV shows and films, it's since branched into the territory with so far excellent results.

House Of Cards, Making A Murderer, Daredevil and Orange Is The New Black have all put conventional television studios on notice and helped to solidify Netflix's reputation as a force to be reckoned with. Although the streaming giant doesn't release official viewership figures for its own shows, its rating system does give a decent indication as to how people are viewing and reacting to their shows.

A study by rating site AllFlicks has confirmed what pretty much everyone knew - people prefer Netflix Originals to the other stuff on Netflix.

On average, all of Netflix Originals are rated 3.8 to 3.9 compared to 3.4 to 3.5 for non-Netflix material. When you drill down further into the figures, it gets even more surprising. Netflix Original documentaries have an average rating of 4, compared to 3.5 for the non-Netflix stuff. It's mostly the same for Netflix Original TV shows, too - 3.9 compared to 3.7.

It should be pointed out that Netflix's library of non-Original titles - particularly in the US - has dropped significantly in recent months, which may effect the data.

As it stands, Netflix is pouring more of its considerable resources into funding Original content than library acquisitions - which makes sense when you look at the ratings and their own secretive viewership figures.
