What's more - it may be written and ran by an actual hardcore Trekkie fan.

Michael Gummelt, who's been holding a candle for a new Star Trek series and even created an insanely-detailed idea and universe for his concept, has been invited to Paramount Studios to pitch his show.

Gummelt, who isn't an industry professional or anything of the sort, was contacted by the powers at Paramount to come and pitch his show, which he's called Star Trek: Uncharted.

The pitch, which you can read in full at his website, is set a good few years after Star Trek: Voyager and the Patrick Stewart films and sees our galaxy receiving a message from the far-off Andromeda Galaxy.

When a new technology, space-folding, is created to traverse the distance, a new iteration of the Enterprise is created to seek out the messengers from beyond.

The show, incidentally, was initially going to be called Star Trek: Beyond, however that's the title of the third Star Trek movie with Simon Pegg dropping that one in on us some time ago.

You've got to hand it to Paramount - it's a very clever idea to put a passionate, determined fan in the driver's seat and retool Star Trek for a clearly-hungry TV audience.

Many have felt that Abrams' rejuvenation of the series, though glossy and entertaining, have lost something innate and intrinsic about the original series.

Gummelt's pitch, we think, harkens back to the exploration and wonder of The Next Generation. Really, if you're a Trekkie and you've got time, read his website because it's INCREDIBLY detailed.

He's even outlined who could potentially star in his show, putting forward the likes of Christina Hendricks, Scott Eastwood, Jay Baruchel, Sacha Baron Cohen and (definitely not gonna get her) Natalie Portman for key roles in the mooted series.

It's all very exciting and the fact that Paramount is accepting pitches for a new Star Trek series means we might finally see the Enterprise return to our small screens.

What do you think? Has Star Trek had its day on TV or should it return? Let us know in the comments!
