Whether you read the books by Lucy Maud Montgomery and/or watched the 1980s TV series, for many girls, Anne of Green Gables holds a special place in their childhood memories.
They’ll probably then be using their kids/nieces/random child relative as an excuse to check out Netflix’s latest series, which is a reboot of Anne of Green Gables called Anne.
The series was announced last month and will debut on Netflix on May 12th.
Amybeth McNulty stars in the title role. The series follows a young orphaned girl in 1890, who, after an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers, is mistakenly sent to live with an elderly spinster and her aging brother. Geraldine James (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and R.H. Thomson (Avonlea) will playing spinster Marilla and her brother Matthew, respectively.
The new series will reportedly delve into topics not touched on by earlier adaptations — feminism, bullying, prejudice, and identity — while still honoring Montgomery’s book.
