Ed Sheeran has deleted his Twitter account in the wake of online backlash he received over his cameo in the most recent episode of Game of Thrones.

The British pop sensation appeared in the opening episode of Game of Thrones' seventh season on Sunday night. The cameo saw him play one of a number of Lannister soldiers that Arya Stark meets on her journey. As well as acting in the scene, Sheeran also sang a folk song that was taken directly from George R.R. Martin's source material.

While there were some fans that were happy to see the singer on their favourite show...

...all of the positive comments seemed to be drowned out by the negative reaction.

Earlier this month, Sheeran claimed that he had stopped using Twitter due to negative comments from trolls which led fans to believe that he was quitting the social media platform. However he took to Instagram a couple of days later to clarify that he wasn't quitting Twitter, he just wasn't going to be reading comments on it any more.

However it now looks like the Game of Thrones abuse was the straw that broke the camel's back and Sheeran has had enough. His Twitter handle @EdSheeran, is no longer in use.

Sheeran is set to cameo in another iconic TV series soon. He'll play a love interest for Lisa in an upcoming episode of The Simpsons
