Matt Smith's exit from Doctor Who took longtime fans by surprise, with many feeling that it was all too soon.

Peter Capaldi, who is now the Twelfth Doctor, is said to be leaving the long-running series in 2017. Despite being a lifelong fan of the series, Capaldi's tenure as Time Lord hasn't gone over well with audiences.

Smith, however, was a huge hit and has been open about how much he misses the show and regrets leaving. According to a report by the Daily Mirror, showrunner Steven Moffat has hinted that Smith may return and noted that Smith is "quite open about how much he misses it, and how much he wishes he hadn't left."

Whether it's true or not, one thing's for certain - Smith returning to the series says a lot about how keen BBC are to keep Doctor Who on top with audiences.

After the floundering return of Top Gear, BBC's programming is being steadily outpaced by the likes of Netflix and Amazon. Funnily enough, Matt Smith's latest role will see him playing Prince Phillip in The Crown, a new miniseries about the British royal family.

What do you think? Should Smith return as Doctor Who? How has Capaldi been for you? Let us know in the comments!
