David Gillick has come out on top as the winner was revealed in Ireland's Celebrity Masterchef last night. The first time winner was relieved to finally be able to tell people he won, after being made wait two months for the show to air.
Gillick beat off competition from RTE newsreader Aengus MacGriana and broadcaster Maia Dunphy to take the title. Speaking to RTE the athlete said, 'It's great that I don't have to lie to anyone anymore, I've been lying to everyone for the past few months so it's great to have it out in the open now! To be honest I was really surprised. When they actually said that I won it I was completely gobsmacked, I was lost for words, I didn't know what to say or what to do, I was completely overwhelmed.'
Last nights episode saw the finalists fly out to Dubai to impress judges with a three course dinner. Gillick chose to cook Quinoa crumbed lamb cutlets, Halibut fillet with an avocado, apple and celeriac remoulade with lemon vinaigrette and Summer meringue torte. MacGriana came runner up to Gillick failing to impress the judges with his lamb shank. 'You've cooked some beautiful food all the way through the competition, and today you've cooked a big bulky dish,' said Dylan McGrath. Where as Dunphy came in third place and was visibly upset after the judges comments, describing her dish as 'disappointing'.
Gillick admitted he found keeping his win a secret frustrating and was relieved open up about the win. 'It was a frustrating time because I won it two months ago, but I couldn't celebrate it properly or tell anyone, so I finally got to take it out of the wardrobe'. The athlete also opened up about his time on the show saying, 'I got a lot of self-fulfilment and a lot of confidence from the whole experience and that makes you look forward to cooking and trust yourself a bit more with regards what you're cooking. If I was to throw a dinner party now I'd have full confidence in myself that I would pull it off whereas before I would have been like 'No way, they're all going to hate this.'
So can we see Gillick branching out into cooking as a career? Well, he hasn't ruled it out saying,'I've always been interested in healthy living and healthy food and it's part of what I do in my career. If opportunities were to arise due to this I'd take a run at it.'
