As we all know, there is nothing Idris Elba can’t do so we’re looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

The Luther actor is going to star in a modern retelling of the Gothic novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo.

Elba is not only going to play the titular role, but he will also direct the project and produce music for it.

Elba’s directorial debut, Yardie, screened at Sundance and he has also been known to DJ. Elba previously collaborated with Netflix on the comedy Turn Up Charlie, which he created, starred in and exec produced.

The new Hunchback of Notre Dame film is being described as a "sonic and musical experience." The novel has been adapted numerous times, perhaps most popularly into the 1996 Disney animated version, but also into film versions starring the likes of Irish actress Maureen O’Hara. Other adaptations have seen Anthony Hopkins and Mandy Patinkin take on the title role.

The story follows the hunchback Quasimodo and his doomed romance with a gypsy called Esmeralda. Penning the script of this latest version is Michael Mitnick, the scriptwriter behind The Current War and The Giver.
