If you thought to yourself that it was decidedly odd that a female-led show about the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland paid its main star - that is, the person playing Queen Elizabeth - less than her on-screen husband, you weren't alone.

A lot of people thought the same - including Claire Foy herself. In her first comments on the controversy since the news broke last week, Foy explained that she wasn't surprised that everyone kicked off about the whole thing. "I’m surprised because I’m at the centre of it," Foy told EW.

"Anything that I’m at the centre of like that is very very odd, and feels very very out of ordinary, but I’m not in the sense that it was a female-led drama. I’m not surprised that people saw and went, ‘Oh, that’s a bit odd.’ But I know that Matt feels the same that I do, that it’s odd to find yourself at the centre (of a story) that you didn’t particularly ask for."

The outcome of the story, however, was that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings donated the pay difference between the two actors to Time's Up, with Left Bank Pictures - the production company behind The Crown - confirming that, going forward, "nobody gets paid more than the Queen."
