The Italians could only manage draws against Spain and Croatia in their opening two fixtures in Group C, but goals by enigmatic strikers Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli gave them a 2-0 victory against us and proved enough to maintain their chances of winning this trophy for the first time since 1968, with the top team in England's group standing between them and a place in the second semi-final.
