17-year-old American Red Gerard fell asleep watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine and missed his 06.00am alarm clock.

The slope style snowboarder was the first American to win a gold medal at the Pyeongchang games on Sunday, and the youngest ever winner since 1928.

But it almost didn’t happen.

Instead of getting to bed early the night before the final, and maybe sticking on a motivational podcast, or even listening to Al Pacino’s speech in Any Given Sunday, Gerard decided to turn on Netflix.

His choice was Andy Samberg’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine and we’re guessing he convinced himself he’d only watch one episode. We’ve all been there in fairness.

When his alarm went off the next morning he slept right through and if it wasn’t for his room-mate Kyle Mack waking him up 20 minutes later who knows what might have happened.

When Gerard eventually woke he was in such a panic he couldn’t find his ski jacket, so he took Mack’s to the slope instead. Not ideal preparation for the biggest day of your life.

But the rest as they say is history:
