If you're heading away for a romantic trip and you're stowing an engagement ring in your hand luggage, there's going to be a point where the thing'll crop up on security scanners and the whole thing's busted.

So, how do you do it? Try to convince your significant other to check in luggage so you can hide it there? Hide it in some part of your body? Or even try bribe the security people? Thankfully, there's a way around it in one English airport.

East Midlands Airport is now operating a "secret code" system which will allow you to get an engagement ring through security without revealing it to your significant other. The system works by e-mailing an address - [email protected] - with your details, flight number and what have you and they'll give you the code to get it through the airport.

Essentially, you're taken out of the line and brought to a more secure scanning area where the ring's checked through and without anyone knowing. Speaking to Metro, East Midlands Airport head of security Matthew Quinney explained that the system came about as "it would put a big damper on someone’s meticulously planned romantic trip if their big surprise was revealed even before they’ve boarded the plane."

"Arguably, there are more romantic places to be proposed to than in our security hall."
