A “zyzzyva” is a genus of the tropical weevil (also known as a snout beetle) which is native to South America and typically found in palm trees. Well, now you know.

It takes the honour from “zythum”, an Egyptian malt beer, as the dictionary’s closer.

Also added to the updated version is “hygge”, derived from the Norwegian word for wellbeing and described as “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being”.

Strangely enough, 50 new terms relating to tennis made the cut including “tennis mom” and “tennis dad”.

“Post-truth”, the word of the year in 2016, has also been added to the dictionary which contains over 829,000 words.

If you’re hoping to get a word into the 2018 version, then you’d better start using it now.

“We require several independent examples of the word being used, and also evidence that the word has been in use for a reasonable amount of time,” said a spokesperson.
