A new maths puzzle is doing the rounds now (it’s been shared over 55,000 times) and you’ll be kicking yourself if you don’t get it.

It involves the time-old trick of moving matchsticks to form a new equation but here’s the catch – you can only move one.

The equation reads: 6 + 4 = 4

According to the instructions, you can only ‘Move just one stick to fix the equation.’

Have a think about it and if you’re SURE you know the answer, or just give up, scroll down for the solution.

Ok, here we go.

Rotate the green match stick that forms part of the six by 90 degrees clockwise.

This makes the 6 into a zero so the equation reads: 0 + 4 = 4

There is a second solution: take the vertical stick from the addition sign to make the six an eight.

The equation then reads: 8 - 4 = 4

So there you go – isn’t maths fun?
