A man in his twenties has been arrested and is being held at Pearse St. Garda Station in connection with the graffiti and vandalism on The George yesterday.
The graffiti, which used homophobic language and featured Nazi symbolism, was removed and washed off, however images were widely shared across social media. In a statement by Pearse St. Garda Station, the man is described as being in his twenties is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
The George Bar have numerous CCTV cameras set up and had identified the man using them, and it's likely that the CCTV camera footage are being used as part of evidence.
If convicted under the Criminal Damage Act of 1991, the man could face up to twelve months in prison as well as a fine. However, owing to the nature of the graffiti itself, it's possible he may also be charged with incitement to hatred under the Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act of 1989.
