Will Smith plays the part of a con artist in his latest movie Focus, and he definitely looks the part.

The key to pulling off a good con, as Smith's character Nicky explains in the trailer, is that "there is a science to getting people to trust you". You need to know what buttons to push, what will inspire confidence, and one of the biggest factors is looking the part, making sure that you're dressed for success.

Smith's character Nicky lives by that latter maxim; it's one of the easiest things to get right even if you just want to get the right type of attention next time you walk in to a room rather than trying to pull a fast con. In the world of high stakes heists, Smith dons a number of incredibly slick suits that make sure when he's sitting next to a millionaire, he looks like he's supposed to be there.

A lot of the suits that Smith wears are three piece, making clever use of layering. Whether you want to bulk up or are trying to achieve a slimming effect, layering is the way to go, not to mention that it helps you to look sharp along the way. Above (and in the main image, a classic grey suit is matched with shades of blue that will work well in particular for Irish men, who tend to be quite fair.

Smith's suits also stand out thanks to their strong and bold patterns, and here he's bringing together checks, a subtle stripe in the suit, and a pop of colour with an abstract design in the form of a bold pocket square. This helps him blend into his surroundings with the more ostentatious high rollers, while still not drawing too much attention as being something over the top and out of place.

With much of the movie taking place in the beautiful, sunny surroundings of Buenos Aires or the warmer climates of New Orleans, the suits are light and summery, matched with pastel shades in the shirts and accessories for an injection of colour. That means we can steal a few style tips from Smith as we move away from the colder weather and in to Spring/Summer, however if you still want to dress warm and make an impression, given that the Irish weather will take a little bit longer to improve, you can still opt for a strong pattern, as Smith does below. The shades are a little bit darker and a heavier wool suit is paired with some more toned down accessories, but the strong check pattern is still evident, something that's definitely on trend at the moment and doesn't look like it's going anywhere.
