It’s been a disappointing year for politics but a more positive one for Irish sports, and this has been reflected by the most searched Google topics in the country this year.

Data released by the company revealed that Euro 2016 was the most searched for topic through Google’s search engine in Ireland this year. Hit mobile game Pokemon Go was also one of the most searched for topics, as was musician David Bowie following his death at the start of this year.

The Google Year in Search revealed that Brexit, the US election and "Ireland election 2016" were the most commonly explored news stories on the online platform.

US politicians Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Saunders were the top three politicians most inquired about by Google users in Ireland. Domestic politicians Joan Burton, Lucinda Creighton and Gerry Adams were further down the list but also made it into the top ten.

There were no surprises in the top searched for movies, which included Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman and Deadpool.
