Tenerife

With a vibrant nightlife, amazing beaches and chilled out vibe, Playa de las Americas is Tenerife's answer to Ibiza, with the advantage of being a great sun destination all year round. Hang out at the island’s coolest beach bars - Papagayo and Monkey Beach - where you can lounge on comfortable sofas, sipping cocktails and listening to laid back beats by day, then seamlessly shift towards wild and wonderful dance parties as the sun goes down. As you saunter from the deck to the bar for another round of Margaritas, take in the spectacular views over Playa Troya and La Gomera island. Take a day trip to San Cristóbal de la Laguna for a taste of the ‘real Tenerife’, where you can visit the farmer’s market at Plaza del Cristo. With a high student population, this pretty town is known for its nightlife, as much as for its tapas bars. Calle Herradores, a pedestrianised street filled with shops, bars and restaurants, is the place to go in the evening. Cool down at Lago Martianez in Puerto de la Cruz, an incredible one kilometre stretch of man-made seawater pools, beaches, lush gardens and sun terraces. Created by celebrated Canary Island artist, César Manrique, its the largest outdoor museum of contemporary art in Europe and even has its own water volcano and geyser.

Majorca

Filled with cocktail bars and nightclubs, Magaluf, in the southwest of the Island is the fashionable place to be. For a memorable sun holiday, chill out at Nikki Beach, where you can eat, drink, swim and dance all day at this luxurious beach club. Party until dawn at super club Pacha Mallorca - where the glitz and glamour is spread over 3 floors and a beautiful outdoor terrace looks onto the port in Palma. With a restaurant, numerous bars and dance floors, as well as guest DJs during the busy summer months - there’s plenty to keep you occupied. Take a break from clubbing and explore Majorca’s wineries on one of your chill-out days. Numerous companies offer guided wine tours, with itineraries that can include trekking in the Serra de Tramuntana, boat trips, sampling traditional Majorcan cuisine, and of course a visit to a local winery, where you can taste a selection of the wines that are produced on the island. And if you really want to get away from it all, visit the picturesque town of Deia, where a winding road leads to a sheltered cove that is perfect for swimming. Two tiny restaurants perched in the surrounding cliffs offer fresh local fish and cool San Miguel beer. There couldn’t be a prettier place to end your 2017 Sun Holiday!

Lisbon

With its contemporary boardwalk, hopping nightlife, quirky street art and cool cultural vibe, it’s no surprise that Lisbon is one of my top city break destinations for 2017. Take the historic yellow tram no. 28 which runs through some of the most popular districts to get your bearings of the city. It’s also one of the cheapest ways to see the local attractions such as the iconic 19th Century Arco de Rua Augusta. Incredibly affordable, Lisbon is a great city for shopping. You’ll find well-known brands in the pedestrian area of Baixa. For specialist leather and linen items, as well as other local Portuguese crafts, stroll through the areas of Chiado and Bario Alto. For fresh local cuisine, check out Mercado de Ribeira, where you’ll discover over 30 stalls selling a mixture of local delicacies. For tasty seafood dishes, there is a fantastic range of eateries in the Docklands area, with views of the fantastic waterfront park Ribeira das Naus in this newly revived section of the city. Finally, you can’t bid farewell to Lisbon without taking an obligatory selfie from the Santa Justa lift! This beautifully crafted elevator offers a unique panoramic view across the entire city.

Amsterdam

Famous for its pretty canals, laid back atmosphere, eclectic music scene and late-night cafes, Amsterdam is a no-brainer if you’re looking for a fun-filled weekend away in 2017. Do it like the Dutch and explore the capital on two wheels. You’ll find plenty of places to hire bicycles. Unlike Ireland, they have the most amazing bike lanes with raised curbs, making it a safe and easy way to navigate the city. Get your exercise in while stopping off for sunflower overload at the Van Gogh museum, the quirky Red Light District and shopping in Dam Square. Inject your tour of the Dutch capital with a bit of culture by visiting the historic Anne Frank House. As most of us probably read her diary as nippers, it’s fascinating to see the place where it was written and find out more about the persecution of the jews in Europe during the war. And for a truly spectacular Amsterdam experience, visit during April 27, when the canals are completely taken over with boat parties and a sea of orange for the national holiday called Kings Day.

Rome

With so many amazing sights and sounds, Rome is one city I could return to time and again, as there’s always something new to discover. If 2017 marks your first visit to Rome, be assured that it’s not all about ancient art and museums, there are tonnes of fun things to do. How about exploring the city on a Vespa? For a unique Italian experience, you can book private guided tours for up to 8 people that take you through the city on the back of a scooter. Or you can opt to explore the city in a different way - through your palate. Sign up for a walking tour for Foodies that takes you to the Testaccio neighbourhood, south of the Colosseum, where you can sample delicious Italian food at Rome’s oldest market. For great vintage shops and hip cafes, the Trastevere, San Lorenzo and Monti neighbourhoods are fantastic for wandering around during the day and people watching. At night, everyone congregates in the many squares dotted throughout the city. Piazza Trilussa in Trastevere becomes packed, especially on weekends. Grab a beer in a corner shop and join the locals drinking on the church steps!
