Yes, it is completely possible for a live eel to swim out of a water tap - because it actually happened in Limavady, Co. Derry no less.

According to a report on Derry Now, a local family from the area apparently discovered a horsehair eel attempting to swim out of their kitchen sink tap.

The family's mother, who asked not to be named, said that her son who discovered it when running cold water. "Initially, I thought it was a piece of fishing wire but then I saw it swimming about. When I realised what it was, I couldn’t believe it," she said.

Northern Ireland Water have since issued a statement on the matter, saying that "NI Water staff called to the property and lifted samples for analysis. Our scientific staff will liaise directly with the customer and also provide advice on any remedial work required."

Typically, a horsehair eel can reach a total length of around 75 centimetres, and are often found in more warmer climates such as Florida, Puerto Rico and the Gulf of Mexico - not in a kitchen tap in Derry.
